New EU Energy Performance of Buildings Directive: 3 conditions for success

In December 2023, EU legislators reached a long-awaited agreement on the recast of the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD). While the agreement still has to be formally adopted and enter into force, FIEC and its Irish President, Philip Crampton, have already taken a closer look at what will become a key legislative text that will shape the European renovation and new construction market for the years to come. According to President Crampton, the success of the new "EU Green Buildings Directive" depends on three main issues.

EU Commission paves the way for a stronger EWC Directive

The European Commission today presented its proposal for a revision of the Directive on European Works Councils (EWCs), the voice of workers in multinational companies. The proposed revisions are a first step towards improving the Directive. Trade unions will continue to fight for the inclusion of key elements to give EWCs genuinely stronger rights, as the ball is now in the court of the European Parliament and the Council’s.

About the EU economic security package "EU rules should boost investment, not hinder it!"

 
Frankfurt/Brussels, 24 January 2024 – The EU Commission's economic security package contains key proposals on foreign direct investment in the EU and European investments abroad. Ulrich Ackermann, Head of VDMA Foreign Trade, comments:

•    "European investments abroad do not jeopardize public security and order in the EU. Insofar as they are linked to technology transfer, the EU's security interests are already protected by export controls for sensitive technology."

Europe sets course for cooperation on cross-border offshore grids

Today the European Network of Transmission System Operators for Electricity (ENTSO-E) published EU Offshore Network Development Plans (ONDPs). The ONDPs are the first comprehensive cross-border review of existing offshore grid capacity and future offshore grid requirements at sea basin level. They will help to accelerate the expansion of offshore wind and facilitate the deployment of innovative grid solutions to integrate offshore wind power into Europe’s energy system.
