Imposition of provisional anti-dumping duties on EU imports in ceramic tiles from China

The European Commission imposed today provisional anti-dumping duties against imports of ceramic tiles originating in China. The duties range from 26.2% to 36.6% for all the Chinese companies that cooperated with the Commission's investigation. A residual duty of 73% applies to other Chinese companies which chose not to cooperate.
The provisional duties apply to glazed and unglazed ceramic flags and paving, hearth or wall tiles; glazed and unglazed ceramic mosaic cubes and similar articles, whether or not rectangular, whether or not on a backing.

EU food safety agency future questioned

Plaid Cymru MEP Jill Evans has welcomed today's decision by the European Parliament's Petitions Committee to call for an investigation into the European Food Safety Agency (EFSA). The decision follows two petitions submitted by Dr Brian John of anti-GMO campaign organisation GM Free Cymru and supported by Ms Evans.

MEPs heard serious questions raised about EFSA's impartiality in taking decisions in respect of authorising GMOs, with key concerns including:

CCCTB: the route to go to enhance cross-border trade and reduce compliance costs , but implementation and revenues consequences issues shall be carefully watched.

- ACCA welcomes European Commissioner for taxation Algirdas Šemeta publication today of a proposal for a Directive on a Common Consolidated Corporate Tax Base (CCCTB). For the global accountancy body, the European Commission rightly proposed that member states should maintain the ability to set their own tax rates (thus maintaining some control over tax revenues), and make the CCCTB available to companies, which then could decide which tax regime to adopt -

The Japanese tragedy affects us all - EP should debate nuclear safety

Lothar Bisky, Chair of the European United Left/Nordic Green Left group in the European Parliament said today on behalf of his group: "We are all concerned and appalled by the current tragedy in Japan. After the earthquake and tsunami, the Japanese people are facing nuclear panic."

EP budget - Decision to release funds for new 'European House of History' criticised as irresponsible

The European Parliament budget committee today voted to allocate €2.5 million from the EP's budget towards the proposed 'European House of History' (1). The Greens criticised the decision to allocate the funds without cutting spending in other areas, with Green MEP and draftsperson (rapporteur) for the EP's 2011 budget Helga Trüpel saying:
