Bring health and safety rules into the 21st century to better protect European workers, S&Ds demand from EU Commission

Today, the European Parliament will debate and vote the Vind report on health and safety at work. The Socialists and Democrats have been spearheading ‘vision zero’ to ensure that no more workers die from work-related illnesses, including cancer, accidents and psychosocial risks. As working from home has become daily life for millions of Europeans, the EU must up-date its health and safety rules to take into account new risks for health and mental well-being.

S&Ds welcome the European Commission’s plan for greater independence from Russian gas and more energy security

The S&Ds welcomed the European Commission’s idea to propose an obligation for all EU member states to have all gas reserves 90% full on 1 October of each year. According to the S&D Group, who has long been calling for such a measure, this would be crucial to avoid price volatility every heating season. The Socialists and Democrats also called on the Commission to elaborate a plan to get rid of Russian fossil fuel supplies and make sure the necessary infrastructure for alternative sources is in place throughout the EU.

Hydrogen Accelerator must replace, repurpose and reinvest

Switching gear towards a rapid energy transition has never been more important. Hydrogenewables – the combination of clean hydrogen and renewable electricity – can cooperatively renovate our energy system and reduce the EU’s dependency. They deliver a more resilient EU energy system, reduce EU’s consumption of fossil fuels, and ensure security of supply. Now is the moment for the EU to accelerate the deployment of hydrogen technologies by replacing, repurposing, and reinvesting.

Stop violence against women and domestic violence!

The Socialists and Democrats welcome the European Commission’s proposed Directive to combat violence against women and domestic violence, presented today on International Women’s Day.

Although the S&Ds would have preferred a more comprehensive law, covering all forms of gender-based violence and implementing the standards of the Istanbul Convention, they consider today’s proposal a big step towards eradicating violence against women, a key S&D demand for over a decade now.

Wealthy Russians linked to Putin must be stripped of all rights bought through investment schemes

The S&D Group in the European Parliament supports a ban on citizenship based investment schemes that unfairly allow wealthy foreign investors to buy EU rights such as free movement.

S&D MEPs also firmly support an amendment tabled since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine that calls for member states to withdraw the citizenship and residency rights, granted through investment schemes, of anyone with links to Putin’s regime and who is facing EU sanctions.

Stop malign foreign actors from interfering in our democracies! EP to adopt strong report by INGE Special Committee set up on the S&Ds’ initiative

Tomorrow, the members of the European Parliament will vote on the final draft report by the Special Committee on Foreign Interference in all Democratic Processes in the European Union, including Disinformation (INGE), set up on the S&Ds’ initiative in 2020.
