With far-right support, conservatives block progressives’ push to cut colossal carbon footprint of crypto-currencies

Today, the economic and monetary affairs committee of the European Parliament voted on new rules for regulating crypto-assets (MiCA - markets in crypto-assets). The Socialists and Democrats have been pushing for a regulatory response that protects consumers and combats money laundering, but also ensures crypto-assets are put on a more sustainable path. Bitcoin mining alone uses up more energy than countries the size of Austria or Portugal.

EucoLight webinar spotlights the latest developments in Member States to prevent EPR non-compliance through online marketplaces

On 09 March, over 200 participants attended a webinar organised by EucoLight, the European Association of lighting WEEE compliance schemes.  The webinar confirmed that five member states are now implementing national legislation to prevent EPR non-compliance via online platforms.  Speakers from France, Germany, Spain, Austria and Finland explained the national measure put in place to stop the widespread avoidance of WEEE obligations by companies selling through online marketplaces.

Iratxe García will travel to Berlin next week to meet Chancellor Olaf Scholz and leading SPD representatives

The leader of the Socialists and Democrats in the European Parliament, Iratxe García MEP, will pay a two-day visit to Berlin on 14-15 March. At the invitation of Rolf Mützenich, the chair of the SPD parliamentary group in the Bundestag, Iratxe García will address the SPD bureau on Monday, accompanied by the head of the SPD delegation in the European Parliament, Jens Geier, and by S&D Group vice-president Gaby Bischoff.

The European Parliament today held a plenary debate, in the presence of the Estonian prime minister, Kaja Kallas, on Europe’s security situation following the Russian aggression and invasion of Ukraine. During the debate, the leader of the Socialists and Democrats expressed her full support for Ukraine, but also for Estonia and all the EU countries bordering with Russia and with Ukraine, insisting on the unity of all Europeans at this difficult time.

EUROFER urges LME and FCA to take necessary action to prevent further artificial surges in nickel prices

Brussels, 09 March 2022 – EUROFER calls on the London Metal Exchange (LME) and the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) to take the necessary action to resolve the massive, artificial fluctuations in nickel prices and impose the indispensable measures to ensure it does not reoccur. EUROFER also requests a commitment on transparency on moves by single or group of market participants exceeding regular participation and trading limits.

Joint statement IPA Europe – European Dairy Association (EDA)

The European Dairy Association (EDA) and the International Probiotics Association – Europe (IPA Europe) want to highlight the contribution that the probiotic sector can make on a number of the objectives listed in the EU Farm to Fork Strategy, and jointly ask for a clear engagement of the European Commission and stakeholders on the use of the term probiotic on labelling and communication towards consumers in Europe.
