High inflation and low investment hampers recovery, ACCA survey shows - Western European finance professionals most pessimistic as region ‘ tests the limits of austerity’

Rising inflation and flat investment have kept the world’s economic recovery stuck in reverse, the latest Global Economic Conditions Survey from ACCA (the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants) has shown.

Of the 2,186 ACCA members surveyed between 16 May and 6 June 2011, only 26% reported increased confidence, down from 28% three months ago, with 57% saying that economic conditions are either deteriorating or stagnating, up from 51% only three months ago.

Israel has to guarantee safety of captured Gaza-activists

 

The French ship "Dignity al-Karama", the only remaining vessel from the "Gaza Flotilla", was surrounded by the Israeli navy upon nearing the Gaza coast. The boat's lines of communication have been jammed and the Israeli navy have boarded the boat and are now taking it to the port of Ashdod.

Background
On 13 April 2011, the European Commission presented a proposal to overhaul the current EU rules on the taxation of energy products. The new rules aim to restructure the way energy products are taxed to take into account both their CO2 emissions and energy content.

Online gaming and betting: proposed new law in Germany criticised by the European Commission

The European Commission today issued a ‘detailed opinion’ against the draft German State Gambling Treaty. This detailed opinion confirms that the Commission believes the proposed German State Treaty is in breach of EU law. If the draft is not substantially changed after this warning, Germany risks formal infringement proceedings, referral to the European Court of Justice (CJEU) and ultimately financial penalties.

Lommel (Belgium), 18/07/2011 – European Commissioner for Research, Innovation and Science, Máire Geoghegan-Quinn made a field trip today to EUCAR, the European Council for Automotive R&D, for a demonstration of advanced vehicle technology. Automotive manufacturers showed first-hand how technologies supported by EU research funding are being developed, creating the innovations for future market launch.

European Public Sector Award – EPSA 2011: “The run-up to the Final Event and Ceremony has started with 58 applications being awarded a Best Practice Certificate.”

The EPSA 2011 Team at EIPA is pleased to announce that, following the three evaluation steps out of four completed so far, 58 applications from among the 274 submitted have been chosen to receive a Best Practice Certificate. These 58 applications were submitted by 18 countries in total, across the three EPSA 2011 themes.

Public Transport becomes a real mobility provider

 

The International Association of Public Transport (UITP) recently reached a new official position on “Combined Mobility”. The document shows how traditional public transport can overcome some of its shortcomings and offer high flexibility and convenience for to  meet mobility demand of modern fellow citizens: by building up the so-called “sustainable mobility alliance” with car-sharing, cycling and taxis, public transport is able to offer a full mobility portfolio and compete with the private car in terms of convenience and cost-structure.

 

Caritas Europa – Call for Tenders

As part of the new its new Strategic Framework, Caritas Europa calls for tenders to evaluate the European Solidarity Fund (ESF) system.

Created by Caritas Europa in 1996, the ESF is a multi-lateral mechanism, coordinated at Caritas Europa level that offers solidarity-based financial support for structural costs to its member organisations, which for various reasons are unable to autonomously finance the structural expenses of their core basic operational structures.
