Criminal rights - Greater cross-border rights during criminal proceedings, as MEPs endorse EU letter of rights

New EU rules strengthening the right to information of accused persons and suspects in criminal proceedings were today adopted by the European Parliament (1). The Greens welcomed the new rules, which will ensure suspects and accused persons are given information on their rights in a language they understand prior to any interview, as well as access to materials relating to the case. After the vote, Green home affairs spokesperson Jan Philipp Albrecht said:

ITER nuclear fusion - EP rubberstamps deal to pour more public funds into runaway ITER budget

The European Parliament today voted to approve an agreement between the EP and Council, under which €1.3 billion of the budget overrun for the ITER nuclear fusion project will be funded from the EU budget in 2012-13 (1). The Greens have hit out at the deal and believe no more public funds should be spent on ITER. Speaking after the vote, Green budgetary spokesperson Helga Trüpel said:

"That the EU summit did not succeed in bringing about a breakthrough to solve the global financial crisis is beyond doubt," said GUE/NGL President Lothar Bisky responding to Commission and Council statements on the outcome of the 8-9 December summit.

"The much sought-after "trust" of the markets presupposes that markets are rational and ignores the greed for short-term profits as the key driving force of market activities", President Bisky explained.

Clarifying cyber security incident reporting: guidelines on how to implement the new telecom legislation on security & integrity “Art 13a”

ENISA, the EU’s ‘cyber security’ agency, has today issued two technical guidelines. The first describes how to implement the mandatory cyber security incident reporting scheme for telecom operators, parameters, thresholds, and how to report; the second describes specific security measures telecom operators should take.

Trans Adriatic Pipeline signs agreement to identify rightful landowners along the pipeline route in Albania

Tirana, Albania. The Trans Adriatic Pipeline has signed a cooperation agreement with the Albanian Immovable Property Registration Office in Tirana. The agreement enables TAP to establish, enhance and update cadastral data (property ownership, boundaries, and usage) within TAP’s pipeline corridor in Albania.

European Standards Organisations enlarge membership to include Turkey

The European Committee for Standardization (CEN) and the European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardization (CENELEC) have both decided to grant full membership status to the Turkish Standards Institution (TSE). This change will take effect on 1 January 2012, and represents an important step towards the full participation of Turkey in the European Single Market.
