Venezuela elections - Gabi Zimmer congratulates Nicolas Maduro on his victory

Gabi Zimmer, chair of the GUE/NGL parliamentary group, today congratulated Nicolas Maduro on his clear victory in the presidential election in Venezuela.

The electoral system of Venezuela is internationally reputed as being optimal, and the move by the Venezuelan opposition to question the results is a disgrace.

Decision of the EP on Backloading – 16 April 2013

The President of Eurometaux, Oliver Bell, voiced a high level of concern regarding the decision which will be put to the vote of the European Parliament on 16 April 2013. The decision would allow the "Backloading" of emission allowances from the emissions trading system (ETS), i.e. the removal of certificates at the start of the 3rd trading period and their introduction shortly before 2020. "This proposal and other short-term measures will have detrimental effects on the global competitiveness of the European Industry," states Bell.

Future of IFRS: what purpose(s) do we want annual accounts to serve?

International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS), prepared by the London-based International Accounting Standards Board (IASB), aim to standardise accounting practices internationally. In order to enhance the development of the single capital market in Europe, IFRS were introduced for consolidated accounts of EU-listed companies in 2005 as a result of a Regulation in 2002. That Regulation is currently being reviewed by the European Commission as part of its Better Regulation agenda.

IRU appoints new Secretary General

Geneva – The General Assembly of the International Road Transport Union (IRU) today appointed Umberto de Pretto as new Secretary General of the IRU.  He replaces IRU Secretary General Martin Marmy and will assume this new function as of 1 June 2013.

IRU adopts guidelines to improve efficiency at loading bays

IRU Goods Transport Council adopts guidelines on loading bay operations, with recommendations addressing current inefficiencies, through a voluntary code of conduct, contractual clarifications and optimal use of available IT applications.

Geneva – The IRU Goods Transport Council (CTM) yesterday adopted industry guidelines to remedy the current inefficiencies during loading bay operations, such as hour-long ramp waiting times, drivers engaged by ramp personnel in loading/unloading and other ancillary activities.
