EU Budget Discharge: financial controllers put pressure on European Commission. Markus Pieper MEP

 The European Parliament put the European Commission under pressure today in a vote on the discharge of the Commission budget which MEPs combined with 30 demands for more transparency on the use of EU funds and better controls on how the money is being spent. The European Commission must shoulder more responsibility for the use of EU funds in Member States, MEPs said.

Europe’s F word – Federalism or Fragmentation

Joining forces for the fourth Brussels Think Tank Dialogue on April 22, ten leading Brussels-based think tanks will debate “Europe’s F word – Federalism or Fragmentation” with key EU policymakers including European Commission President José Manuel Barroso, and Herman Van Rompuy, European Council President. 

During day-long discussions, think tank representatives, MEPs, EU officials and diplomats will also seek new responses to three key challenges facing Europe:

Marisa Matias votes against own ECB report following unacceptable right-wing amendments

Amendments inserted in defence of the actions of the Troika, in GUE/NGL MEP Marisa Matias's report on the ECB, have forced her to withdraw her name from and vote against the report.

The report concerns the activities of the ECB in 2011. Following amendments inserted by the right-wing EPP group that crossed several of the rapporteur's red lines, the final version of the report does not include provisions for the accountability of the ECB as a member of the Troika. Similarly, no reference to the ECB's gains from the adjustment programmes is set to be included.

EU must finally create instruments to ensure guarantee of fundamental rights

Commenting in the context of a debate in the European Parliament today on recent constitutional amendments passed in Hungary and their democratic implications, Greens/EFA co-president Rebecca Harms said:

"Fundamental rights and the rule of law are cornerstones of the European project. It is of paramount importance that all EU member states guarantee these fundamental EU values, as set out in the Treaty and the EU needs more effective instruments to ensure this.

GUE/NGL denounces attempts to undermine Venezuelan democracy

The GUE/NGL group in the European Parliament has warned of the destabilization campaign and violence generated by Venezuelan opposition candidate Henrique Capriles who has not recognized the presidential election results that gave victory to Nicolas Maduro in a fair and democratic poll carried out in a reliable electoral system.

The GUE/NGL denounces the putschist attitude of the opposition and its candidate. All international organizations must support the free and sovereign decision of the Venezuelan people.

Member States, Commission, MEPs and Industry held the first meeting of the Forum for EU Refining and discussed the situation of the EU refining industry, including both non EU competitive pressures and the impact of EU legislation.

Brussels, 16 April 2013: At the first meeting of the Forum for EU Refining, held on Friday 12 April 2013, comprehensive discussions on the situation of the industry covered several topics. .These included the competitive pressure now felt from Russia and the US unconventional energy “revolution”; two particularly high risk implementing measures - Fuel Quality Directive Article 7A and the Refining BREF under the Industrial Emissions Directive; and an update on the status of the Refining Fitness check.

Strengthening social dialogue in public services is essential across Europe

In reaction to the recently published Industrial Relations and Social Dialogue in Europe 2012 report and the related European Commission (EC) conference in Budapest, CEEP welcomed the extensive focus put on industrial relations in the public sector. “We are very pleased that the EC’s analysis puts such a strong emphasis on some public services. This signifies a real recognition of the importance of ensuring effective social dialogue in these areas for the resilience of the economy and social cohesion as a whole”, declared Valeria Ronzitti, General Secretary of CEEP.

International Forum Gastein calls for applications for the 2013 European Health Award

Bad Hofgastein, April 16th 2013 – In the run-up to the sixteenth annual European Health Forum Gastein conference which will take place from 2 to 4 October 2013, the International Forum Gastein has again announced the annual search for a winner of its European Health Award. The award of €10,000 Euros will be sponsored by the Austrian Federal Ministry of Health and FOPI, the association of research-based pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies in Austria.

Matias grills Draghi on violations of ECB mandate

"Who authorised you to violate the limits of your mandate in defining the adjustment programmes of the troika?" GUE/NGL MEP Marisa Matias asked European Central Bank (ECB) president Mario Draghi today during a debate on her report that assesses ECB activities during 2011.

EU emissions trading - Irresponsible EP majority votes to prevent action to save EU carbon market

The European Parliament today voted to reject a regulatory proposal aimed at tackling the oversupply of emissions allowances in the EU's emissions trading scheme by postponing the auctioning of 900 million allowances (1). The Greens strongly condemned the vote and called on the Commission to urgently come forward with new, more meaningful and more fundamental reforms to address the problems with the ETS.
