Fluorinated greenhouse gases: EP Environment committee deadlines are unrealistic

Today, the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety committee of the European Parliament adopted the report on fluorinated greenhouse gases by Green MEP, Bas Eickhout, and voted for unrealistic deadlines as regards the entry into force of a service ban for refrigeration equipment. It also calls for an allocation fee system, which is overly bureaucratic. All these measures will result in increased costs for the commerce sector.

MEPs ask Hungarian government to change course and fully respect European values

The European Parliament's civil liberties committee today adopted a report by Green MEP Rui Tavares (Portugal) on the situation of fundamental rights in Hungary. The committee approved over 40 recommendations to the Hungarian government and the European Commission that were in the draft report. The Greens/EFA group, in line with their initial position, supported an amendment calling for immediate activation of the process of Article 7 TEU.

The new Bertelsmann Foundation project on Global Economic Dynamics (GED) launches today with the results of an ambitious and detailed econometric
simulation of the economic effects of the coming “Transatlantic Trade and
Investment Partnership" (TTIP).

Our simulations are based on latest econometric world models, developed in
cooperation with the IFO-Institute’s Center for Economic Studies, mapping for the
first time the complex interrelations and shifts of international trade flows and
their effects on welfare and employment in 126 countries worldwide.

Tobacco industry interests put before public health in International Trade Committee vote

A majority of MEPs on the Parliament's International Trade Committee have today voted in favour of both less stringent rules on health warnings and tobacco packaging and for menthol to remain an additive in cigarettes. This vote result (15 in favour and 12 against) goes against the recommendations of public health groups and follows a massive tobacco industry lobbying campaign.

Call for urgent action to save eels teetering on the brink

With the European eel stock in a precarious state across Europe, the European Parliament's fisheries committee today voted on legislative proposals on management of eel fisheries. The EU urgently needs to adopt a new recovery plan to give eel stocks a chance and there is also a need for a more sustainable approach to re-stocking. Green rapporteur/draftsperson Isabella Lövin is calling for a new EU regulation to reflect this and after the vote she said:
