Greens refuse to bow to coercive pressures from the Council

The negotiations on the EU's Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF) have come to a head, with the Council yesterday submitting a final proposal to the European Parliament. However, there are deep divisions between the European Parliament negotiators. At the beginning of next week, the European Parliament's political groups will have to decide on whether to approve or reject the Council's proposal. Helga Trüpel, budgetary spokesperson for the Greens/EFA group in the European Parliament, said:

Emissions Trading System backloading

The European Parliament's environment committee today adopted a new position on the European Commission's Emissions Trading System (ETS) backloading proposal. This is the second time that the environment committee has voted in favour of postponing the auctioning of emissions permits and comes after the plenary as a whole voted in April to reject the proposals. The amendments adopted today reflect a compromise struck between conservatives, liberals and social democrats, but were not backed by the Green MEPs.

Yesterday, the European Parliament’s Environment Committee adopted its first reading report on the Regulation on fluorinated greenhouse gases. The regulation should reduce the global warming potential of F gases placed on the EU market to 16 % compared to current levels by 2030. In addition, MEPs propose early phase-out dates for numerous applications.

20 June 2013, Brussels: The GSMA today issued a new report that demonstrates that mobile services generate the greatest economic value of eight major applications of spectrum1. Developed by Plum Consulting, the report ‘Valuing the Use of Spectrum in the EU’ reveals that mobile’s use of spectrum currently contributes € 269 billion to the economies of the EU’s 27 Member States, far more than any other use of spectrum, such as wireless local area networks and terrestrial broadcasting.

F-Gases Regulation Revision: EP ENVI Committee proposal would put EU Single Market at risk

  •     The suggested ban on the pre-charging of equipment would give companies based outside the EU a competitive advantage over those based within the EU.
  •     The suggested ban on stationary air conditioning and the suggested phase-down is too ambitious and will hamper heat pump technology.
  •     The suggested export ban of equipment would distort further European manufacturer’s competitive position.
