Busy agenda for first time Presidency
Lithuania, a rather recent EU Member having joined the EU in 2004, has a fully packed programme for a short and challenging first time Presidency mandate.

Punctuated by summer and winter holidays and much affected by the intra-institutional changes next year, there is high pressure on the Lithuanians to finalise as much work as possible on a vast array of different policy areas before the EU is forced to slowdown for the EU elections and Commission changes in 2014.

Following reports that former European Commissioner John Dalli flew to the Bahamas apparently with the intention of transferring money there, the EPP Group’s Spokeswoman in the Budgetary Control Committee of the European Parliament, Inge Grässle MEP has called the most recent revelation in the Dalli case “another surprising turn in a story full of surprises and turns”.

Latest spy claims: EU must not tolerate US espionage and Snowden should be granted asylum

Allegations that US agents have not only been spying on European citizens but also on EU institutions, embassies, permanent representations and diplomats have been met with strong criticism from GUE/NGL MEPs.

In light of this recent scandal, the Group demands that the EU-US trade negotiations are immediately suspended pending clarification of the situation.

GUE/NGL MEPs also reiterated that Edward Snowden must be protected and that the EU should grant him asylum.

Weak Council position preserves à la carte safeguards for 'too big to fail' institutions

After several months of discussions, the Council agreed this morning on its general approach on the Banking Recovery and Resolution Directive, opening the way to negotiations with the European parliament, which had adopted its own position in May. The objective is to reach a final agreement by the end of the year. The directive, which aims to limit as much as possible the use of taxpayer money in rescuing failing banks, represents a key pillar of EU banking union.
