‘The European Social Model – a key driver for competitiveness, the four EU Agencies’ contributions

Four EU agencies - Cedefop, ETF, Eurofound and EU-OSHA – and the EP Employment and Social Affairs Committee are joining forces on 25 September 2013 to examine and highlight how each one is contributing to a strengthened European Social Model – in its own unique way. Assessing how exactly the European Social Model can contribute to increased competitiveness, the Agencies will provide different perspectives in the context of the current crisis.

Greece: fanatic acts have no place in a democratic society. Joseph Daul, Chairman of the EPP Group

The Chairman of the EPP Group, Joseph Daul, strongly condemns the killing of Pavlos Fyssas, a 34 year-old man, who, according to news reports, was assassinated yesterday in Athens by members of the Golden Dawn party. “Fanatic acts and violence do not have any place in modern and democratic societies in any EU Member States. Any crime is abominable but a political one is unacceptable within the European Union. We strongly condemn any kind of violence. Those responsible for this murder must be brought to justice as soon as possible.

Sakharov-winner Nasrin Sotoudeh released

Commenting on the unexpected early release of human rights activist and 2012 Sakharov Prize winner Nasrin Sotoudeh from prison in Tehran, Green MEP and chair of the EP's human rights subcommittee Barbara Lochbihler said:

EDSO elects new Chairman and welcomes RWE Germany as member

Barcelona, Spain – EDSO for Smart Grids (EDSO), the association of leading European electricity distribution system operators, has elected a new Chairman, João Torres. The CEO of the Portuguese distribution company EDP Distribução, was pleased to accept;

“It is a great honour for me to take on the chairmanship of EDSO. Europe is facing tremendous challenges in terms of greenhouse gas emissions, renewable energy and energy efficiency – and with the development of smart grids, the DSOs will play a very important role in reaching these ambitious EU objectives.”

Baltic Bureau meeting: GUE/NGL holds special session in Riga

A delegation of GUE/NGL MEPs will gather in Riga tomorrow for a special meeting in the Latvian capital.

GUE/NGL MEP Alfreds Rubiks, the only Latvian member of the Group, and GUE/NGL President Gabi Zimmer will open the meeting, whose agenda includes how Latvia has tackled the crisis, the Lithuanian Presidency of the EU, issues surrounding the introduction of the Euro in Latvia, and Riga's naming as a 2014 Capital of Culture.

Marine Knowledge 2020: a sustainable future in the sea. Maria do Céu Patrão Neves MEP

The European Parliament’s Fisheries Committee today voted on Maria do Céu Patrão Neves' initiative Report on ‘Marine Knowledge 2020: Seabed mapping for promoting sustainable fisheries’, which was unanimously adopted.

The Report concerns the Green Paper presented by the European Commission on ‘Marine Knowledge 2020: from seabed mapping to ocean forecasting’, integrated in the actions aimed at meeting the targets of the Europe 2020 Strategy for the marine and maritime sectors and to develop and expand the ‘Blue Growth’.

Commission bows to London and gives up on European supervision of benchmarks

The European Commission today presented a legislative proposal on benchmarks used for commodities, interbank lending and exchange rates. The proposal is ostensibly aimed at addressing flaws in the current rules, which allowed the LIBOR and EURIBOR scandals to occur, however the Greens have expressed concern that the draft legislation will fail to deliver on this aim. Commenting on the legislative proposal, Green finance spokesperson Sven Giegold said:

“EMF Clarifies Misleading Reports on Impact of the Mortgage Credit Directive”

The European Mortgage Federation (EMF) acknowledges last week’s agreement by the European Parliament (EP) Plenary on the draft Mortgage Credit Directive (MCD) and looks forward to final adoption by the EP and Council. On the whole, the EMF welcomes the future Directive as clarification of practices which have been in existence in Member States for decades.

Historic agreement provides basis for closer cooperation between European and Russian standardization organizations

Brussels, 17 September 2013 - Leaders from the European and Russian standardization organizations have signed a historic agreement in St Petersburg today (17 September). The Cooperation Agreement between CEN, CENELEC and Rosstandart provides a framework for closer collaboration on various aspects of standardization, which will facilitate trade in goods and services between Europe and Russia.
