EHFG 2013: EUROPE’S HEALTH SYSTEMS MUST BE MADE CRISIS-PROOF

The economic crisis and austerity programmes have had a serious impact on health budgets and on general standards of health. How can Europe’s health systems be made more resilient in the face of such crises? This question is the focus of discussions at the 16th European Health Forum Gastein (EHFG), which opened today in Bad Hofgastein. Social development and prosperity will be put at risk if austerity programmes begin to pose a danger to health systems, warned Professor Helmut Brand, President of the EHFG.

BRUXELLES, 1st October 2013. AEGEE-Europe, together with 10 youth organizations from all over Europe, has launched the campaign YouthRights.NOW for the recognition of specific rights for youth. These youth rights include education and training, employment, housing, health and the right to a healthy environment, participation, sexual and reproductive health, culture and sport, non-discrimination, as wells as proper information on youth policies and its implementation.

Civil society in Europe has to unite efforts to tackle bullying. This was the strong message echoed in Palermo by 17 European organizations calling for the establishment of a European Anti-bullying Day.    

Across Europe hundreds of thousands of children are experiencing bullying every day. The bullying phenomenon not only persists, but grows in extent with damaging consequences not only on children and families, but ultimately on European societies as a whole.

GUE/NGL candidate Edward Snowden makes Sakharov finalist list

MEPs on Parliament's Foreign Affairs and Development committees have designated GUE/NGL candidate Edward Snowden a Sakharov prize finalist.

GUE/NGL MEP Marie-Christine Vergiat said: "Edward Snowden had the courage to reveal the extent to which citizens' rights are being violated when it comes to data protection, confirming what we had long suspected. It is one of the major scandals of our times. The European Parliament must protect all whistleblowers who stand up to states that violate human rights and fundamental freedoms in any way whatsoever."

On 26 September, the Internal Market & Consumer Protection Committee of the European Parliament unanimously adopted MEP Weiler’s report on the proposed directive on radio equipment. ANEC welcomes the support of MEPs for an amendment intended to see the introduction of a universal charger for all mobile phones.
