COGEN Europe applauds today’s adoption by the European Parliament of a Microgeneration Resolution[1] that highlights the need to unlock the potential of small scale technologies, such as micro-cogeneration[2].
 

Plastics can be recycled to more than 60% by 2020

  • PRE released a study showing that plastics can potentially reach a much higher recycling rate
  • A resource efficiency vision for plastics can be implemented that would divert 24 Mt of plastics from landfills
  • 360 000 green jobs can be created

 

A plastics recycling target of 62% is achievable by 2020. Plastics Recyclers Europe released a study showing that a higher recycling rate for plastics will create benefits for the European Union environment, economy and resource efficiency.

Disability rights organisations stage sit-in in European Parliament

During a press conference held in the European Parliament this afternoon, hosted by MEP Paul Murphy, members of the European Network for Independent Living, an organisation of disability rights organisations,
announced it was staging a sit-in in room N.1.4 in the EP in Strasbourg until such time as the President of the Intergroup on Disability Rights came to talk and listen to them about their campaign on the right to independent living.

Digital single market proposals need to promote investment, innovation and growth

BRUSSELS, September 11, 2013– Today the European Commission announced a set of proposals to speed up the creation of a European digital single market. Alongside a Regulation aimed at achieving a Connected Continent, the Commission has also adopted a Costing and Non-Discrimination Recommendation and a Communication on the Telecommunications Single Market. ETNO welcomes the Recommendation in particular and believes that it will provide the much needed price stability for copper lines and will support NGA investments through the lifting of price regulation.

Fisheries - Endangered eel stock needs urgent attention say MEPs

The European Parliament today voted on legislative proposals on management of eel fisheries. Crucially, MEPs endorsed the call by Green draftsperson/rapporteur Isabella Lövin for the European Commission to come forward with a new EU regulation on the management of this endangered species. Commenting after the vote, Isabella Lövin stated:

GUE/NGL voices its opposition to war in Syria

Speaking in a plenary debate this afternoon on the situation in Syria, GUE/NGL MEPs Willy Meyer and Marisa Matias set out the Group's strong opposition to military action.

Willy Meyer said: "Our group is against the civil war as well as all forms of intervention. We need a political solution that does not bypass the UN."

Sakharov Prize Edward Snowden nominated by Greens/EFA group for EU freedom of thought prize

The Greens/EFA group last night agreed to nominate whistleblower Edward Snowden for this year's Sakharov Prize (1). The nomination for the EU's annual award for 'freedom of thought' recognises his role in shedding light on the mass surveillance practises of the US and European secret services. Commenting on the nomination, Greens/EFA co-presidents Rebecca Harms and Dany Cohn-Bendit stated:

Left MEPs nominate Edward Snowden for Sakharov prize

The European United Left / Nordic Green Left group in the European Parliament will nominate Edward Snowden for the 2013 Sakharov Prize.

Whistleblowers cannot be treated like criminals, they must have our protection. Edward Snowden risked his life to confirm what we had long suspected regarding mass online surveillance, a major scandal of our times. He revealed details of violations of EU data protection law and fundamental rights.
