The Parliament will use its full responsibility to approve the EU budget and a deal on Brexit, says Iratxe García ahead of the European Council

Today the president of the Socialists and Democrats in the European Parliament, Iratxe García, attended the Party of the European Socialists’ meeting with heads of governments and Commissioners of the S&D political family.

Ahead of the European Council that will start later today, Iratxe García expressed the Group’s position regarding the pressing issues that must be resolved before the end of the year.

Iratxe García said: 

To stop tax havens like Cayman Islands from getting off the hook, S&Ds push for tougher criteria

Today, the European Parliament’s economic committee is sending a strong call to the Commission and Council to reform the EU’s tax havens list. MEPs vote on the first-ever resolution from the newly established permanent tax matters sub-committee, for which the Socialists and Democrats had pushed hard. The resolution demands greater transparency and stricter criteria for the EU’s tax haven list, as well as real consequences for tax havens.

S&Ds: We will fight for sustainable, responsible, green future for batteries – new regulation sets out a positive way forward for Europe

The S&D Group welcomes the Commission proposal for a new EU battery regulation, shaped by the commitment of our Commissioner, Maroš Šefčovič. This proposal is important as it has huge environmental value as well as great industrial and strategic potential. A sustainable and responsible European battery market could create up to 5 million jobs and be worth 250 billion euros by 2025. 

The S&D co-ordinator in the environment committee, Jytte Guteland MEP, said:

European Maritime Technology Sector: rescue plan needed to save the industry and its workers

Workers in the European Maritime Technology sector call for a sectoral recovery plan to safeguard their jobs. The sector, which supports more than 500,000 direct jobs and 400,000 indirect jobs in the EU, with thousands more across wider Europe, was already in bad shape before COVID-19 hit.

S&Ds have done it: the Just Transition Fund will be fully green with a red heart!

An unprecedented agreement was reached this evening between the European Parliament and the Council on the Just Transition Fund (JTF), totaling 17.5 billion euros. The JTF will be used to support regions in the EU that are most fuel-dependent in their transition to a net-zero-carbon economy, in order to limit the social and economic impact.

The Socialists and Democrats in the European Parliament have adopted a strategy for the Conference on the Future of Europe. The aim is to start as soon as possible with civic engagement and influence the process so that it is as open and participative as possible.

Final Conference of the European-funded project Good Wood

CEI-Bois hosted the online Final Conference of the European-funded project Good Wood on the 9 of December 2020.  The project was conducted under the leadership of Confapi, the Italian Confederation of the small and medium enterprises, and carried out between February 2019 and December 2020.

S&Ds put solidarity at heart of Asylum and Migration Fund

Today, the S&Ds led the way in securing an agreement with member states on establishing the Asylum and Migration Fund in the EU.

The European Parliament and the Council agreed a fund worth € 9.882 billion over the next seven years that makes solidarity a key objective, alongside actions covering support for the Common European Asylum System, legal migration and integration and returns.
