We must protect children against online sexual abuse while preserving fundamental rights

The Socialists and Democrats in the European Parliament are working to protect children against sexual abuse with exemptions to specific facets of EU privacy rules for providers, while introducing additional safeguards. Today’s vote in the civil liberties, justice and home affairs committee is a step forward in ensuring that providers can continue the job of detecting and removing online child sexual abuse material.

Council conclusions on taxation are encouraging sign EU ministers are willing to crack down on harmful tax practices

Reacting to the recent conclusions on taxation from the EU economic and finance ministers, Pedro Marques MEP, S&D spokesperson on tax matters, said:

“We applaud Olaf Scholz’s efforts to step up the EU’s fight for tax justice. The Council today took on another important step in the fight against tax avoidance and evasion. From 2023 onwards, EU’s tax authorities will automatically exchange information on income earned by sellers on digital platforms.

Work is invading your private life? S&Ds fight for your right to disconnect

On the initiative of S&D MEP Alex Agius Saliba, the employment and social affairs committee today calls on the Commission to regulate the right to disconnect for all employees in the EU, in a vote on his report adopted today.

Agreement on 2021 EU budget – now the ball is in Hungary and Poland’s court

Negotiators from the European Parliament concluded an agreement with the Council earlier today on the EU’s budget for the upcoming year. This agreement is all the more important as it precedes what should be a final agreement in the EU Council on the next seven-year budget for the European Union (MFF).
