European Parliament and EU Council reach a deal on stronger, more resilient European Globalisation Fund

The European Parliament tonight struck a deal with the EU Council on the funding for the European Globalisation Fund (EGF) for the next seven years. With an annual financial ceiling of €186 million, the EGF will help workers who lose their jobs as a result of restructuring in a company or economic sector.

Today the Socialists and Democrats are leading a progressive majority on two resolutions which confirm that the EU’s migration and asylum policies need long-term solutions based on solidarity and respect for fundamental rights. The S&D Group is supporting the report on the Implementation of the Dublin III Regulation that calls for responsibility for asylum applications to be fairly shared across the EU member states.

S&Ds call for safe Covid-19 vaccines, rapidly available for all who need them and not only those who can afford them

The S&D Group urges the EU Commission and EU Council to facilitate the production of a safe vaccine to be made available and distributed in a rapid, equal, accessible and affordable manner to all. The Covid-19 pandemic has clearly shown the need to not only strengthen all member states’ healthcare systems, but also to have a better coordinated and solidary European approach that could improve patient safety and bridge national shortcomings.

The European Parliament awarded today its most distinguished Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought to the democratic opposition in Belarus*, who, under the leadership of the country’s brave women, have for the past four months been tirelessly protesting against the dictatorship, violence and repression of Alyaksandr Lukashenka and the stolen presidential election of 9 August.
