S&Ds welcome Fit for 55 climate package – we’ll work to make this crucial transition just and socially sustainable

We have finally moved from words to deeds to turn Europe into a climate-neutral economy by 2050, with the Fit for 55 package*. The S&D Group has always been at the forefront on this decisive challenge. Hence, we salute the ambitious and bold commitment provided by the EU Commission and in particular by Vice-President Frans Timmermans, which has led to the adoption today of one of the most important legislative packages of this legislature.

FIT FOR 55 - HIGHER AMBITION, BUT SCATTERED IMPLEMENTATION PLAN

The Fit for 55 Package published today, features increased targets and sub-targets for energy efficiency, renewable energy and emission reductions, which aims to deliver a fair, competitive and green transition by 2030 and beyond. While sending the right signals for higher ambition, the proposals fall short of providing a comprehensive roadmap of measures to support the cost-effective achievement of targets.

S&Ds call on Commission to protect platform workers with EU-wide rules

The Socialists and Democrats managed to include a strong call for a Commission proposal on better protecting platform workers in a report voted in the European Parliament’s employment committee. The goal is to improve the working conditions for all digital platform workers, including the genuinely self-employed. Currently, platform workers are not covered by an EU legal instrument, leaving them in a legally precarious situation.

Respect for human rights and better democratic accountability needed for the EU’s external and development policy

The Socialists and Democrats included better democratic control and transparency in a report on how EU money is spent through the Trust Funds and the Facility for Refugees in Turkey. Thanks to the input from the S&Ds, the report adopted today sends a strong message to the European Commission that it must not forget about development policies and respect for human rights and the rule of law, rather than focusing mainly on migration management.

S&Ds present their vaccine position paper – making the EU ready for any new pandemic is crucial

It’s been more than a year since the Covid-19 pandemic spread across Europe and the world. Millions have died from this virus. The magnitude of the crisis – socially, economically and on a personal level – is unprecedented in the history of the European Union. We must continue to ramp up efforts to expand vaccine manufacturing and distribution.
