The Chairman of the EPP Group, Joseph Daul, urges Member States to agree on a realistic long-term European budget. During a plenary debate on the 7-8 February European Council, Joseph Daul stressed that the EPP Group will vote against a reduced budget.

Representatives of the Dalai Lama and Desmond Tutu today presented a call for the peaceful resolution of the Kurdish question in Turkey. The "International Peace Initiative" is supported by nine international leaders, among them former US president Jimmy Carter, former Finnish and Swedish prime ministers Paavo Lipponen and Ingvar Carlsson.

 

Europe’s banks welcome changes to AML and fund transfers legislation

The European Banking Federation (EBF) welcomes the proposal of the European Commission for a fourth Anti-Money-Laundering (AML) Directive and a new Regulation on fund transfers. The proposed legislation is in line with and brings into force the recently revised standards of the Financial Action Task Force.

Focus on FATCA was the theme of the conference staged in Rome on 1 February by the European Banking Federation (EBF), hosted by the Italian Banking Association.

The first up and running European Citizens Initiative (ECI) - Water is a Human Right – is more than 4/5ths of the way towards  the target of a million online signatures. And many workers and citizens are collecting paper signatures as well.  This ECI was the first to start the paper and on-line collection of signatures. It is the first initiative that has passed the ¾ threshold and likely to be the first to reach the 1 million mark.

More retailers sign up to agreement in bid to help tackle waste

 
The European retail sector is pleased to welcome four new signatories to its waste agreement which was first presented on 9 October 2012. The supermarket chains Carrefour, Hofer, Jerónimo Martins and Vomar have recently joined other retailers in their fight against waste, thus demonstrating commerce’s commitment towards a sustainable economy.
