New Chair and Vice-Chair for European Banking Industry Committee

On 28 January, the Chairmanship of the European Banking Industry Committee (EBIC)1, which rotates on a yearly basis, was handed over to Gerhard Hofmann, a Vice-President of the European Association of Co-operative Banks (EACB) and a Board member of the Bundesverband der Deutschen Volksbanken und Raiffeisenbanken (BVR). Vice-Chair of EBIC will be Joseph Delhaye, Senior Vice President at the Banque et Caisse d’Epargne de l’Etat, Luxembourg (European Savings Banks Group).

EU rules on concession Wrongheaded legislation poses threat to basic service provision

The European Parliament's internal market committee today voted on new EU legislation on the award of concessions (1). The Greens voted against the outcome, expressing concern about the potential impact on the provision of basic public services, like water.

“The main achievement of today’s vote for public services employers and providers is the recognition of the freedom of authorities to define, organise and finance SGEIs”, stated Valeria Ronzitti, General Secretary of CEEP. This is a major improvement from the initial drafts of the Directives and should give authorities the necessary room for maneuver when choosing the adequate tool for the provision of essential services to citizens.

The European Parliament agriculture committee today concluded its voting on 4 key legislative proposals aimed at reforming the EU's Common Agricultural Policy. The Greens expressed regret at the outcome, which the group regards as a missed opportunity for the fundamental reform the CAP needs. After the vote, Green MEP and co-chair of the EP's agriculture committee José Bové said:
