Visa concessions on card fees: a step in the right direction

The commerce sector welcomes the commitments offered today by Visa Europe on its interchange fees and associated rules. The card scheme has offered to cut its interchange fees on credit cards to 0.3%. It will also remove restrictions on cross-border acquiring.

Strengthening Europe's industry: EPP Group meeting in Dresden

The Bureau of the EPP Group in the European Parliament will hold two-day political talks in Dresden, Germany, to discuss ways to strengthen Europe's industry against the background of continuing high unemployment and weak demand in several EU Member States. The discussions on 16 and 17 May, on the invitation of the CDU Minister-President of Saxony and former EPP Group Member, Stanislaw Tillich, will concentrate on exploring ways to build on and improve Europe's industrial base as a means for generating economic growth and fostering new employment opportunities.

EuropaBio film launch: Biobased solutions for a brighter bioeconomy

Today, EuropaBio launches a collection of new films on the key enabling role of industrial biotechnology in creating a more vibrant, sustainable and competitive EU bioeconomy.  The bioeconomy encompasses the production of renewable biological resources and their conversion into food, feed, biobased products and bioenergy, via innovative and efficient technologies provided by industrial biotechnology.

AEGEE-Europe's project Europe on Track wins 2013 European Charlemagne Youth Prize

Europe on Track, was awarded first prize at the 2013 Charlemagne Youth Prize ceremony on 7 May in Aachen University.

The Europe on Track project aims for a better future for European youth, to find solutions for the pressing issue of the rising rate in youth unemployment, to advocate for a sustainable future and to promote entrepreneurship among young people. Project has been selected as Spanish Contester of the 2013 European Charlemagne Youth Prize.

“Energy prices and economic competitiveness”

The Spring Summit of the Heads of State and Government of the European Union is scheduled for May 22. The President of the European Council Herman Van Rompuy has dedicated the Summit to energy policy and competitiveness. This choice is fully understandable in light of Eurostat data, which show an EU-wide increase in gas prices for the industrial consumers of 28,3 % and for private households by 23,1 % in the period between 2010 and 2012. The issue of energy prices is of crucial importance to the competitiveness of the economy as a whole.

CAPE TOWN / GENEVA, 9 May 2013  – A new record low price for human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccines will help ensure millions of girls in developing countries can be protected against cervical cancer.

Thanks to the GAVI Alliance, the poorest countries will now have access to a sustainable supply of HPV vaccines for as low as US$ 4.50 per dose. The same vaccines can cost more than $100 in developed countries and the previous lowest public sector price was $13 per dose.
