The Socialists and Democrats in the European Parliament are deeply concerned about the deteriorating situation in Colombia. Since 28 April, weeks of protests in Colombia have seen growing tensions, deaths, disappearances and arbitrary detentions. The Socialists and Democrats call on the Colombian authorities to de-escalate tensions and step up their efforts to find a negotiated solution through dialogue.

The EU telecommunications ministers are discussing the digital future of the European Union. The EU's ambitious plans for platforms, artificial intelligence and data are good in principle. However, they must not be at the expense of small and medium-sized enterprises.
For years, Socialists and Democrats have denounced the situation in Bulgaria for its growing corruption, and attacks on the rule of law and freedom of media. This is why the public designation of Bulgarian public officials and oligarchs for engaging in corruption by the US State Department comes as no surprise. The close connections over the years with the former Prime Minister, Boyko Borissov, are well known to Bulgarians.
The Commission’s annual rule of law report has the potential to be a useful tool to prevent future erosion of the rule of law in the EU, but more needs to be done to keep up the pressure on governments that have already done the damage, like in Hungary and Poland.
