Today is a good day for the international cooperation and for the external dimension of the European Union. Today is the day we finally kick off ´Global Europe´, also known as the Neighbourhood, Development and International Cooperation Instrument (NDICI), the EU’s financial instrument - worth EUR 79.5 billion - to promote EU values, principles and interests worldwide, with specific regard to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the objectives of the Paris Agreement.

No EU money for member states that do not respect rule of law

The Socialists and Democrats called on the European Commission to trigger the EU’s new budget conditionality mechanism and bring forward the first cases against governments disrespecting the rule of law, without any further delay. In the plenary session in Strasbourg today, MEPs debated the EU’s mechanism that makes the rule of law a condition for national and local authorities to access EU funds. The S&D Group reminded the European Commission of its role as guardian of the EU treaties to ensure EU law is applied by all EU governments.

International community must not abandon the Afghan people, and particularly women!

As the US and NATO troops withdraw from Afghanistan, the S&Ds call on the member states, NATO and the US to remain engaged in assisting Afghanistan in ongoing peace talks between the Afghan government and the Taliban. Only a negotiated ceasefire can establish a lasting peace in the country.
