European Liberal Democrats welcome moves towards new legal statute for European political parties

Fisheries reform - EP votes for more transparent fish labels to promote more sustainable fish consumption

 

The European Parliament today voted on the first of a set of legislative proposals reforming the EU's Common Fisheries Policy (1). The Greens welcomed support for proposals to amend the draft legislation on market organisation to make labelling more transparent. Commenting after the vote, Greens/EFA fisheries spokesperson Isabella Lövin (MEP, Sweden) said:

CEN and CENELEC welcome decision by Members of European Parliament to approve new EU Regulation on European Standardization

The European Standardization Committees CEN and CENELEC have welcomed the result of today’s vote at the European Parliament in Strasbourg, where a massive majority of Members voted in favour of adopting a new Regulation on European Standardization. Some 95% of MEPs (639 out of 674 taking part in the vote) endorsed the amended legislative text, which was agreed during negotiations between the Parliament and the Council of the European Union.

MEPs demand solidarity-based Common Asylum System

Energy efficiency - EP adopts crucial new law; swift implementation urged to maximise EU energy savings drive

The European Parliament today adopted new EU legislation on energy efficiency and savings (1). The EP's draftsperson/rapporteur, Green MEP Claude Turmes, welcomed the vote but called for swift implementation and the reorientation of public policy and funds to ensure these job-creating measures can be delivered. "Parliament has taken on board the importance of a gender-equal green economy" Swedish GUE/NGL MEP Mikael Gustafsson said after the European Parliament backed his "role of women in the green economy" report this morning. 
 

Parliament report shows up member state complicity with CIA torture and kidnapping

MEPs today backed a report on human rights violations related to CIA activities and put forward concrete recommendations to the EU institutions to improve accountability five years after a special European Parliament committee investigated CIA abuses and illegal activities in EU Member States.
