LIFE programme is key to shift to a sustainable economy both for people and for the environment, say S&Ds

Today the European Parliament backed a deal reached with the EU Council for a new LIFE programme 2021-2027. It is the only programme dedicated specifically to environment and climate action, and it remains a crucial, effective and efficient financial instrument to achieve the EU’s objectives.

Parliament backs rules to make medicines cheaper and boost competitiveness of EU manufacturers

The European Parliament today backed new rules that will help reduce costs of medicines for people living in the EU and allow EU-based manufacturers to be more competitive globally.
The newly introduced manufacturing and stockpiling waiver will help EU-based producers of generic and biosimilar medicines, copies of brand-name drugs with the identical or almost identical chemical make-up.

Horizon Europe: S&Ds strengthen criteria for excellence and social impact of Research and Innovation grants

The design of the new financial instrument called Sovereign Bond-Backed Securities (SBBS) was negotiated at the European Parliament, led by S&D MEP Jonás Fernández Álvarez. If adopted by co-legislators, SBBS will help banks to diversify their sovereign exposures and to reduce the link with their home governments. For European citizens this would mean another progressive step towards a more stable and secure economic environment in the Banking Union.

The European Parliament today approved new features to be introduced in new vehicles as of 2022 to further reduce the number of road fatalities. In 2017, 25,300 people died on EU roads and 135,000 were seriously injured.
