Tomorrow, the European Parliament’s International Trade Committee is set to formally adopt the Parliament’s input into the EU’s trade policy review. The Socialists and Democrats are campaigning for a more progressive and forward-looking EU trade policy, in line with the Green Deal and with labour and human rights. To make climate goals, corporate due diligence and workers’ rights a reality, the enforcement of trade and sustainable development provisions must be strengthened and even include sanction-based mechanisms, say the S&Ds.

A strong call for intensified multi-lateral co-operation to overcome the dire economic, social and humanitarian consequences of the Covid-19 pandemic concluded the 13th Euro-Latin American Parliamentary Assembly (EuroLat), which took place on the 4th and 5th November 2020 in a hybrid online and face-to-face session in the European Parliament in Brussels.

For two years the Socialists and Democrats have been fighting for an efficient mechanism that will make access to funds from the EU budget conditional on respecting the rule of law and EU fundamental values. After a difficult negotiation with the EU Council, which only started three weeks ago because the Council blocked any progress for two years, the Parliament and the Council finally reached an agreement this morning on a new mechanism.
