Romania must comply with Commission recommendations on rule of law

The publication today of the latest monitoring report by the European Commission on the state of judicial reform and fight against corruption in Romania and Bulgaria highlights ongoing concerns in both. The report on Romania comes at a time of heightened political tension in the country following a recent change in government and a number of controversial measures.

Guy Verhofstadt, ALDE group leader in the European Parliament, said:

Romania - Commission underlines democratic concerns; serious sanctions must follow if no back-down

The European Commission today adopted reports assessing the progress of reforms in the EU's newest member states Bulgaria and Romania. In its assessment on Romania, the Commission underlined concerns previously raised about recent decisions taken by the government, which are viewed as a threat to the democratic process and institutions in the country. This report will now be considered by EU governments in Council and the Greens believe serious sanctions must follow if Romania fails to swiftly address the concerns raised.

How do other countries react to this? Germany disagrees with France over the way the European Union works, Italy has its own ideas for EU reforms.  Spain is waiting for financial assistance for its indebted banks.

European Union and Its Neighbors

European Neighborhood Policy was introduced in 2006.  It has become evident that it is possible to create reliable foundation to strengthen relationship between  the European Union and its neighboring countries.  Though, in partner countries  much remains to be done in the fields of  living standard, unemployment, economic destabilization, corruption or freeze of political relations in some regions. Actually, mutual relations still have to face challenges, mostly in the sphere of influence in the region.
