Afghan women are S&Ds candidate for the 2021 Sakharov Prize

Today the Socialists and Democrats in the European Parliament decided to nominate a collective of Afghan women for the 2021 Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought. They are women activists, politicians, journalists and teachers who have been fighting for women’s rights, including in the fields of education and political participation, and were themselves part of the political and associative life in Afghanistan before the Taliban seized the control.

Following a three-day fact-finding mission to Beirut, the S&D delegation, led by Vice-President Pedro Marques, and composed of MEPs Isabel Santos, Tonino Picula, Evin Incir and Nora Mebarek, announced that the Socialists and Democrats will request an urgent debate in the next plenary of the European Parliament in Strasbourg to discuss the dreadful situation in Lebanon and how the country can be relaunched.

The S&D vice-president responsible for foreign policy, Pedro Marques MEP, said:

S&Ds want more gender equality through the EU budget

The Socialists and Democrats in the European Parliament today held a webinar on ‘Gender mainstreaming in the EU budget’, with the participation of the European Commissioner for Equality, Helena Dalli. They discussed how to ensure that EU funds benefit men and women equally, and the implementation of this equality principle as a horizontal policy throughout all areas financed by the EU budget.

New SMA Tracker Reveals Gaps in Access for People Living with SMA in Europe

  • Access to standard of care remains an issue for people living with Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) in Europe
  • In collaboration with SMA Europe, Biogen has launched the SMA Policy & Access Tracker during SMA Awareness Month to highlight the issue of inequitable access to standard of care across Europe
  • The initiative includes an interactive map and policy recommendations on access to care options for people living with SMA

Yogesh Patel wins ACCA UK’s national advocate of the Year 2021 by meeting ACCA’s values of inclusion, integrity and innovation

An ACCA Fellow, Yogesh Patel, is announced as ACCA UK’s Regional Advocate of the Year.

Yogesh qualified with ACCA (the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants) in 2011 and is the owner of a firm called Telic based in Harrow, London.

Judged by ACCA UK members, Yogesh was awarded with this accolade because he met all the organisation’s values of inclusion, integrity and innovation.

S&D delegation visit Beirut to encourage formation of a new government and support Lebanese people
