S&Ds disappointed with the proposed revision of workers’ protection from asbestos

S&Ds are disappointed with the revision of the European law on the protection of workers from asbestos proposed today by the European Commission. No time should be wasted and no effort spared to limit workers’ exposure to this highly dangerous substance - the main cause of work-related cancers in Europe*. This is clearly a missed opportunity to prove the commitment to the vision of no work-related deaths.

S&Ds call for more action to tackle the social crisis – recommendations are not enough

The anticipated recommendation regarding the minimum income scheme in Europe that the European Commission is expected to unveil on Wednesday is not enough to tackle the social crisis. More is needed to help Europeans in times of social crisis stemming from the skyrocketing costs of living, highlighted the S&Ds.

Pedro Marques MEP, S&D vice-president responsible for social Europe, said:

Inflation in the healthcare sector requires urgent common European action

During the COVID-19 crisis, European hospitals faced major difficulties related to procurement  and labour recruitment shortages.

S&Ds welcome the EU’s new approach to cancer screening: prevention is better than cure, health inequalities must be eradicated

Prevention is always better than cure, highlighted the S&Ds as they welcomed the new European approach to cancer screening presented today by the European Commission. Today’s recommendation is an important step forward to implement Europe’s Beating Cancer Plan.

In 2020 alone, 2.7 million people were diagnosed with cancer and 1.3 million lost their lives. The Commission estimates that by 2035, cancer cases could increase by up to 25%, making it the leading cause of death in the EU.
