According to Prof Dr Helmut Brand, the new EHFG president, EU actions have contributed much more effectively to health protection in the everyday lives of EU citizens than national policymakers could have. He called for the further development of the EU health mandate established in the Maastricht Agreements, noting that the European Parliament should be given more power to deal with public health topics and the EU should be positioned more strongly in global health issues.

Five trends will cause a complete revamping of hospitals in the near future: concentration on the patient as a whole instead of on individual organs, a multidisciplinary approach, continuous care and system integration, and the search for interventions that are highly effective despite involving minimal resources. Experts at the European Health Forum Gastein argued that this change is needed because health care systems are reaching their limits in terms of financing in the current paradigm.

HFG 2012: Crises are „windows of opportunity“ for health care reform

Economic crises and recessions affect health systems in entirely different ways. In less-developed countries they represent a severe threat to any progress that has been achieved. But in industrialised societies they can prove to be a motor for breaking up old, out-dated, structures and be the catalyst for renewal, experts told the European Health Forum Gastein. But they argued that sustainable reforms depended on their shape and direction being worked out in advance.

EHFG 2012: More prevention in answer to the crisis – Trend toward fat and sugar taxes

Lifestyle diseases account for 77% of the total burden of disease and that figure is on the rise. World Bank expert Dr Armin Fidler called at the EHFG for making prevention measures a priority. A number of countries now levy taxes on unhealthy food to try to influence behaviour and raise new resources for limited budgets.
