20 years Single Market - EuroCommerce congratulates the European Union on this milestone but a lot remains to be done

Europe has come a long way since the establishment of the Single Market in 1992, creating new opportunities and benefits for both businesses and consumers. It has torn down barriers to trade and created a level playing field for European businesses. However, Europe is still a long way from a smoothly functioning Single Market, where doing business between Member States is no different than doing business in one Member State.

To mark International Product Safety Week which starts today, as well as World Standards Day 2012, ANEC urges the European Institutions and Member States to create an EU-wide system of home and leisure accident statistics, aided and funded by the Commission. We further urge Member States to be required to contribute to the establishment of the database and its regular updating.

Yesterday, the European Commission has given a clear signal to Europe’s manufacturing industry by issuing its Communication on Industrial Policy “A Stronger European Industry for Growth and Economic Recovery” that there is more than just rhetoric following President Barroso’s recent ‘State of the Union’ address.

Europe’s flat glass manufacturers welcome the mid-term review of the EU’s integrated industrial policy for the horizon 2020. In particular, they welcome that sustainable construction and related manufacturing industries are recognized as essential for boosting Europe’s economy. In doing so, the European Commission echoes a strong conviction of Glass for Europe that sustainable construction and building renovation should become primary drivers of the transition towards a competitive low-carbon economy.
