EU breakthrough for European energy infrastructure - Permitting deadline set at under 4 years -

The EU agreement reached on guidelines for trans-European energy infrastructure is a long awaited breakthrough for the EU energy sector. The agreement reached between the European Parliament and the EU Council on Tuesday 20 November 2012 includes:

- "Binding deadlines" for building new energy infrastructure set at three years and six months.

- Agreement to identify "priority corridors" for infrastructure, in particular North Seas offshore grid and electricity highways.

The European Parliament's economic and monetary affairs committee today voted on two new EU legislative proposals providing for a supervisory system for European banks. Following the vote, Green finance spokesperson Sven Giegold, who is draftsperson/rapporteur for the EP on the European Banking Authority supervision file, stated:

BRUSSELS, Thursday, 29 November: DIGITALEUROPE welcomes the Council’s decision to launch a Free Trade Agreement negotiation with Japan.

Increased exports, easier trading and improved supply chains are all important and will help jobs and growth in Europe. An economic partnership such as the FTA between the EU and Japan will pave the way to us realising these. Some estimate it could be worth €33 billion each year to the European economy.

The European Parliament's economic and monetary affairs committee today voted to approve proposals for the launch of an enhanced cooperation procedure, with a view to introducing a financial transaction tax for an initial group of 10 EU member states (1).
