S&Ds: EU needs a policy shift to keep engaging on democracy and the rule of law

Socialist and democrat politicians will today meet with academics and civil society activists in Copenhagen to discuss what the EU can do better to protect democracy and the rule of law in member states.  Participants will reaffirm their commitment to the principles laid out in the Copenhagen Criteria 25 years ago, which ensures all member states have the institutions to preserve democratic governance and human rights.

Today, the European Parliament’s committees on transport and on industry, energy and research jointly voted to renew the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) instrument for the period 2021-2027. This is a crucial EU funding instrument that helps finance transport infrastructure, energy grids, pipelines as well as broadband networks. MEPs of both committees voted for a total budget of €43.8bn for the instrument – which included €10bn ring-fenced in the Cohesion Fund for transport projects.
