May offers no way out of Brexit deadlock - time to put it back to the people

S&D MEPs are disappointed by the latest proposals put forward by UK Prime Minister Theresa May that fail to break the deadlock on the UK’s withdrawal from the EU. The new proposals follow the historic defeat of the Conservative government last week over the withdrawal agreement and political declaration on future UK-EU relations.

S&D Group leader Udo Bullmann today congratulated Stefan Löfven who has been confirmed as Prime Minister of Sweden after a vote in the Riksdag.
 
Udo Bullmann stated:
"This is good news not only for Sweden but for the whole of Europe: I am happy that Stefan Löfven succeeded in building a new progressive government after four months of political deadlock. We send him our congratulations and wish him good luck!

In Den Bosch, in the Netherlands, the Dutch Labour Party adopted yesterday its candidate list for the European elections. The Party confirmed Frans Timmermans as the head of the national list. Timmermans will also represent the Party of European Socialists as our political family’s common candidate to be the next President of the European Commission.

Following the murder of the investigative journalist Ahmed Hussein-Suale in Ghana, the chair of the development committee and S&D member, Linda McAvan, said: 
“The murder of investigative journalist Ahmed Hussein-Suale in Ghana is shameful. We are deeply sorry for this tragedy and strongly condemn this ruthless attack against media freedom and democracy. We are confident that the national authorities will soon bring to justice the person responsible for this crime.
