Post-Brexit we must not allow a ‘Singapore-on-Thames’ at our border, say S&Ds, pushing for tougher criteria for EU’s tax haven list

Under the leadership of the Socialists and Democrats, the European Parliament is set to adopt a proposal for greater transparency and stricter criteria for the EU’s tax havens list, to be adopted by the end of 2021 – the first ever resolution of the newly established tax matters sub-committee.

Pedro Marques, MEP and S&D tax matters co-ordinator, said:

Accountancy and finance profession viewed as being ‘broadly inclusive’, but more needs to be done, finds global research

Sixty-one per cent of respondents to a global survey amongst accountancy and finance professionals say that they work in an environment free from harassment and discrimination, ACCA (the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants) reveals in a new report

After four year of hostilities from Trump, time to move transatlantic alliance forward!

Ahead of the inauguration of Joe Biden as new US President later today, the Socialists and Democrats express their belief in the strength of American democracy, and the capacity of the new American leadership to overcome the unprecedented polarisation of US politics.

The S&D Group is ready to start work on a new strong transatlantic alliance between progressive forces, and to build a new multilateral global order.

S&D Group stands firm on Parliament’s unambiguous call for ban on killer robots

The Socialist and Democrats are standing firm on the European Parliament’s position on calling for an unambiguous international ban on the use of lethal weapons or ‘killer robots’ without human oversight. S&D MEPs are today voting against the far right ID Group-led report on the application of artificial intelligence in civil and military as it fails to respect the European Parliament’s clear opposition from 2018 and crosses a clear red line on the issue of human control in military use.

It’s official: guidelines to EU money for recovery are now linked to key socialist demands

The European Parliament gave today its final green light to the so-called Technical Support Instrument (TSI), which provides member states with the support and guidelines they need in preparing reforms and investments as part of their national recovery plans.

The budget allocated to the TSI will be EUR 864,400,000. Any member state can apply for technical support, so long as they submit a request to the Commission by 31 October.

S&Ds: New serious EU sanctions must follow if Russia does not release Alexei Navalny immediately

In today’s plenary debate, the Socialists and Democrats strongly condemned the arrest of Alexei Navalny, one of Russia’s most influential dissidents and anti-corruption activists. Navalny was arrested on his return to Moscow after having spent five months in Germany recovering from a near-deadly poisoning last August.

S&Ds: The EU Commission must step up to eradicate Covid-19 globally. This is the only way forward to get rid of this pandemic

The Socialists and Democrats in the European Parliament have been calling for an effective global health strategy for a long time. We must wipe out the Covid-19 threat not only from Europe but from the rest of the planet, if we eventually want to leave this terrifying pandemic behind. We call on the EU Commission to finally intensify its work and lead the way to build an effective global health policy.

The S&D co-ordinator in the development committee, Udo Bullmann MEP, said:

Window of opportunity to enhance EU regulatory systems wide open as EU pharma strategy prioritises stronger EU networks

The recently published EU pharmaceutical strategy is a welcome tool to address public health challenges in Europe, including equitable access to medicines, reducing medicines shortages, and supporting secure supply chains. At the foundation of addressing these issues is a robust and agile regulatory system. The EU regulatory network, the European Medicines Agency (EMA) and national counterparts, is among the most advanced system worldwide, but still has room for greater efficiency.

S&Ds urge for emergency aid and long-term solution to the humanitarian crisis of migrants in Bosnia and Herzegovina

The Socialists and Democrats called today in the plenary for emergency support for thousands of migrants, refugees and asylum-seekers who are facing a humanitarian disaster in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The dramatic situation once again shows that the EU needs a permanent, fair and lasting solution to migration challenges, based on solidarity with member states at the external borders and vulnerable people at every step of the process.
