Commenting on today's UN vote to grant Palestine the status of non-member observer state at the United Nations, Greens/EFA co-president Dany Cohn-Bendit said:
“Today's historic vote is a vital step on the road to a peaceful solution of the Middle East conflict. With a number of EU member states having joined the European Parliament in backing President Abbas' bid, the EU as a whole must now follow suit and back the decision.
"All parties to the peace process must recognise that a two-state solution is an inevitable part of a peaceful resolution of the conflict. Today's vote, recognising the Palestinian state, is an important step towards this peaceful outcome and will help better balance the role of the parties in view of a resumption of negotiations, which we hope for."
