Exactly one month has passed since the international media flocked to Ghent during spontaneous students’ demonstrations to “celebrate” the fact that their country was now the world champion in terms of the lengthy duration of government negotiations. Although the celebration of such a milestone might seem to be one of Belgium’s many curiosities, it is a symptom of the growing sense of urgency among Belgians, in particular the younger generation. Earlier this year, on 23 January a student demonstration that was mainly organised through new social media had 34.000 people march through the streets of Brussels. People from all sides of the political spectrum came together demanding the formation of a coalition government to steer their country through the many challenges it is facing.
