The S&D Group has called for a full independent investigation into the murder of the Maltese journalist and blogger Daphne Caruana Galizia. The call came during a debate in the European Parliament on the situation in Malta.

S&D Group vice-president Tanja Fajon MEP said:

“The horrific murder of Daphne Caruana Galizia has shaken Europe. Her work as an independent blogger and journalist to expose corruption was praised across the political spectrum. Our priority now must be to do anything we can to support efforts to find those responsible for this heinous crime and ensure they are brought to justice. We support the efforts to carry out an independent investigation into the murder by collaborating with Europol, the FBI and forensic experts. We call on the Maltese authorities to continue to co-operate with this investigation in an open and transparent way.

"As Socialists and Democrats, we will fight to protect freedom of the speech and freedom of the press in Europe and around the world. Last month, we backed strong new protections for whistle-blowers and investigative journalists – against the wishes of the EPP and right wing groups. It would be a fitting tribute to Daphne Caruana Galizia if we can now secure these strong protections in law as soon as possible."

S&D Group Spokesperson for civil liberties, justice and home affairs Birgit Sippel MEP added:

“The rule of law is one of the key principles underpinning the EU and we support a regular process of dialogue with all member states to safeguard the EU’s fundamental values of democracy, fundamental rights and the rule of law. There are questions about tax avoidance in Malta that need to be looked at seriously. However, we should not equate the situation in Malta with that of Hungary or Poland. In both those countries, the Commission and various independent bodies see a real systemic threat to the basic principles of democracy. Pretending Malta is in the same boat for political purposes cheapens this Parliament and defeats genuine attempts to improve the democratic situation across Europe.”
