Council and Commission sluggishness in adopting key legislation in the field of banking and financial services is compounding citizen confusion on the EU and "must be dealt with rapidly" GUE/NGL MEP Jürgen Klute told Commissioner Barnier today in the European Parliament.

"The man or woman on the street is wondering what we've been doing for the last five years to solve the crisis. When we say the Parliament has passed dozens of files, that haven't yet been adopted by the Council, they understand even less."

"Perhaps the delays we are talking about are due to the lack of transparency of the work in Council," said Klute. "If there was more transparency, we could see what the causes of the delays are and citizens would understand."

"If solutions can be found, we could get these files done and dusted before the end of this legislature."
