GUE/NGL MEPs have voiced their support for the European Spring, a pan-European movement of actions, strikes and demonstrations all over Europe that aim to denounce the austerity policies purported by European leaders gathering today in Brussels for their latest summit.

As the original pan-European demonstration organised for today in Brussels around the summit area was denied authorisation by the Belgian police at the last minute, the European Spring actions will now join the trade union demonstration that will begin at the Tram museum at 12:00 and end in Parc Cinquantenaire where it will join a Solidarity Assembly starting at 15:00.

Under the slogan 'Our democracy against their austerity!', the European Spring is a call for an end to reductions in social expenditure, wage cuts, and attacks on social rights.

GUE/NGL MEPs signed a statement condemning Brussels' police refusal to authorise the European Spring march as it is in violation of the right to freedom of assembly.
