GUE/NGL MEPs have voiced their support for a report that seeks to advance sexual and reproductive health and rights in the EU, ahead of a crucial plenary vote on the issue to be held tomorrow morning.

The group also calls on MEPs to reject anti-abortion group's calls for the dossier to be scrapped.

GUE/NGL Shadow rapporteur on the report, Mikael Gustafsson said: "SRHR are central to the agenda for women's rights and gender equality, and is also an issue of respect for human rights. Parliament must vote in favour of the Estrela report as it is firmly pro-choice and states a woman's right to safe and legal abortion, sends a clear message about the right to comprehensive, non-discriminatory sexuality education, underlines the rights of LGBTI persons, and takes several progressive stands on a range of issues which take SRHR policy several steps forward."

GUE/NGL MEP Inês Zuber said: "Safeguarding and fulfilling sexual and reproductive rights, a public health care system for all, universal access to education on sexual and reproductive health… to achieve the rights that this report defends we need an immediate rejection of EU policies that impose cuts to public investment and societal regression."

The Estrela report will be put to a plenary vote tomorrow morning.
