The EU-Latin America Parliamentary Assembly (Eurolat) meeting in Panama finishes today. Over four days, 90 members of Parliament, from both continents, have searched for solutions to our common challenges, such as inequalities, justice, fighting impunity and establishing a common research area between Europe, Latin America and Caribbean countries, as well as globalisation governance.
S&D MEP Ramón Jáuregui, who co-chairs the Eurolat assembly, said from Panama:
“The Eurolat members in this meeting are very worried about the suspension of the EU- Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) summit last October in El Salvador. We risk the potential stagnation of a strategic alliance that is becoming ever more important for both continents, with important geopolitical and economic changes due to an unregulated globalisation.”
At the request of Ramón Jáuregui, the Eurolat Parliamentary Assembly will start working on a declaration that should be sent to the EU-CELAC foreign ministers, who are supposed to meet in Brussels next July.
Ramón Jáuregui added:
“It is important to insist on the need to restart the summits, because they are fundamental political institutions to the bilateral strategic alliance. Furthermore, we have important common challenges that we must urgently address, such as fighting inequalities, our combat against tax fraud and tax havens, or the establishment of new international treaties to protect migrants. This is the message that we in the Eurolat assembly want to send to the governments in Europe, Latin America and the Caribbean.”
