Speaking after Sunday’s parliamentary elections in Romania, S&D Group president Gianni Pittella said:

“We welcome the clear victory of the Romanian Social Democratic party at the Sunday national elections that has ensured the relative majority. This outcome clearly stems from both the strong leadership and political capacity of Liviu Dragnea and from an authentic and progressive government programme. Europe needs a strong and stable Romania.

“Hence, the S&D Group calls on the president of the Republic, Klaus Iohannis, to respect the voice of the Romanian people by facilitating the setting up of a new government based on the crucial support of the Social Democrats.”
