Message of solidarity from GUE/NGL to Greek solidarity protest in Brussels

The GUE/NGL group (European United Left/Nordic Green Left) in the European Parliament would like to express their solidarity with your struggle against the severe attacks that are being unleashed on the Greek population. Unfortunately, we cannot be with you today as the European Parliament meets in Strasbourg this week.
Lies and slander about the living standards, wages, pensions and working conditions of the majority of the Greek population are being spread in order to get support for the draconian austerity measures.
The European United Left/Nordic Green Left wants to send a clear signal to you to today: You - working people, pensioners, the youth and the unemployed - should not, and must not, pay for a crisis that you have not created. We have made this position clear in debates that have taken place in the European Parliament as well as in our constituencies and in the media.
The Greek people - in particular the workers and the employees in the public and private sectors, are in the front line of the attacks. But this is not only true for Greece. Serious cutbacks have also been announced, and are being implemented, in Portugal, Spain and Ireland. Other countries will follow.
This issue affects the whole of the European Union and Europe in general. Therefore we must have a common approach and stand in solidarity in the necessary fight back.
We must stand together to defend our living standards and the future of coming generations.
We demand public and democratic control over the banks and the financial system.
Let the super rich, big business and the big banks pay for the crisis which they have caused.
Meeting: 12:30 Schuman Roundabout
Protest in front of the European Council and Commission, the Permanent Representation of Greece, the European Banking Federation and the International Swaps and Derivatives Association – Ending in Square de Meeûs.
