On 9 December, the EU Council and the European Parliament reached a compromise on theproposal for a directive on the promotion of energy produced from renewable sources.

Pekka PESONEN, Secretary General of Copa and Cogeca, declared, “The compromise on theproposal for a directive on the promotion of energy produced from renewable sources is a clearsuccess of the integrated climate and energy policy. I would like to thank the negotiators from allthree institutions for their work.”

“The directive sets out binding objectives of a 20% share of energy produced from renewablesources in the total energy consumption and 10% of this type of energy in transport. Theseobjectives can only be achieved if the EU’s agriculture and forestry potential is mobilised,” headded.

“The compromise reached on sustainability criteria is positive: only biofuels
produced in a sustainable manner can be included. In the EU, agricultural and forest raw materials already respond to sustainability requirements,” stressed Pekka PESONEN.

“The compromise regarding the proposal for a directive on the promotion of energy produced from renewable sources must now be confirmed as an element of the energy-climate package at the Summit of Heads of State and Government on 11 and 12 December,” concluded the Secretary General of Copa and Cogeca.
