GUE/NGL MEP heads up official EP delegation to Lebanon

Portuguese GUE/NGL MEP Marisa Matias is leading an official European Parliament 5-day MEP delegation to Lebanon.
The MEPs, who arrived in Lebanon on 11 February and will stay until 15 February, have a packed agenda which sees them meet Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati and President Michel Sleiman as well as Lebanese and international NGOs and Lebanese politicians including Kataeb Party President Amine Gemayel and Parliamentary Leader of Hezbollah Mohamad Raad.
The delegation, which has had to be rescheduled twice due to instability in the region, will also address the impact and consequences of the situation in Syria for the region when the MEPs visit a Syrian refugee camp in Baalbeck on Thursday.
The other MEPs on the visit are Rodi Kratsa (EPP), Greece, Sajjad Karim (ECR), United Kingdom, and Franz Obermayer (NI), Austria.
The delegation will also aim to focus attention on electoral reform in Lebanon, the forthcoming June elections and the reopening of the Special Tribunal case into the 14 February 2005 assassination of Rafik Hariri.
