The Socialists and Democrats in the European Parliament commend the global community for a historic achievement at COP28 in Dubai.

The commitment taken by world leaders today to move away from fossil fuels, after intense negotiations, is a much-needed step forward to keep the Paris Agreement goals within reach. S&Ds also praise the increase of support to developing countries, which are the hardest hit by global warming.

S&D vice-president on the Green Deal, Mohammed Chahim, said:

“We very much welcome the commitment to move away from fossil fuels, it is much needed. It is a no-brainer that we drastically need to reduce fossil fuel use to achieve the greenhouse gas emission reductions needed to stay on track with the Paris Agreement Goals. It is good to see that more and more world leaders are choosing to side with science. This is a clear signal to the entire world that sustainable energy is the future.

“We express optimism regarding the determination shown by leaders during COP28 to enhance climate action and safeguard vulnerable communities. The commitment to providing sufficient funding for Loss and Damage and to upholding the Global Goal on Adaptation is a crucial step in ensuring that those who bear the least responsibility for climate change are not left alone in facing its impacts. We have to make sure we continue the work on climate finance and more funding for the Loss and Damage Fund during the upcoming COPs.

“The agreed establishment of a global target for renewables and energy efficiency will put the world on track to scale up the production and accessibility of clean and affordable energy. This is a positive change for our planet and secures a better future for generations to come.”
