Socialists and social democrats in the PES are marking the International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia by strongly reaffirming their commitment to fighting discrimination around the world.

Sergei Stanishev, PES president, said:

"All over the world, including in Europe, lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people face discrimination. That discrimination starts with hurtful comments and disgusted looks, and can end with physical violence or even murder.

"The PES is committed to equality as a core value. We have always fought for equal rights and we will never accept injustice towards the LGBTIQ community."

Sedef Çakmak, president of Rainbow Rose, the LGBTIQ organisation of the PES, added:

"The fight is not over. Progress has been achieved in many countries, but there is much more work to be done. Still members of our community suffer verbal, physical harassment or even murder. As Rainbow Rose we won’t stop fighting until everyone in Europe can live freely, love without consequences and be the person they choose to be!"

Last year, the PES was the first European political party to adopt a comprehensive LGBTIQ roadmap.

Mr Stanishev added:

"We're especially proud of our comrades in the government of Malta, which -- according to ILGA Europe's LGBTQ Index -- put the country at the forefront of LGBTIQ rights for the second year in a row.

"I also want to applaud the initiative of PS Portugal, which is working to pass a gender recognition law that will give all trans people in Portugal the right to live as who they are."
