The Bureau decided to have two candidates of two different genders to promote gender equality in the European institutions

The European Free Alliance will run for the European elections 2024 with a Spitzenkandidat-tandem. Last Monday the Bureau of the party decided to elect two candidates of two different genders to lead their project in the upcoming electoral contest. After an internal process, the candidates will be publicly disclosed at the party’s Congress, which will be celebrated on 13 and 14 October in Strasbourg.

EFA is committed to building a stronger democracy for a European Union closely connected to citizens. As the European party for democracy, self-determination and equality, we believe that the Spitzenkandidat process is only half-way towards the democratic EU we would like to see. Ultimately, we seek a much bigger reform of EU democracy. But at the present moment, with the current Treaties, we recognise that the Spitzenkandidat process is the best option available to better engage all citizens in the decision making of the European Institutions. We will therefore participate whole-heartedly in this step towards a better EU.

“We are on a mission to promote a fairer, more inclusive, and sustainable Europe for all, and choosing a Spitzenkandidat is a vital step in connecting citizens with European democracy”, said EFA President Lorena López de Lacalle. “EFA will select a Spitzenkandidat-tandem which embodies our values, inspires citizens to participate in the elections, and works tirelessly to be the voice for bringing the European Institutions closer to the people”.
