EurActiv, the European media network in 15 languages, is pleased to announce the publication of a new LinksDossier on “The press in Europe: Freedom and pluralism at risk“. The online LinksDossier is available in English and French.

The European Union has long been hailed as one of the areas of the world with the greatest freedom of the press. However, NGOs and international organisations warn that this may be under threat as media finds itself increasingly concentrated in fewer hands and some governments engage in politically motivated lawsuits and outright censorship.

This LinksDossier on press freedom in Europe highlights the following issues:

Loss of media pluralism/independence due to financial difficulties of the media;

Issue of private/public ownership and independence;

Opportunities for pluralism of new media.

The LinksDossier also charts examples of media concentration and censorship across Europe, with a focus on recent developments in Italy, France, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria and candidate countries Macedonia and Turkey.

This document is the latest in a series of more than 400 LinksDossiers that EurActiv has published over the last 10 years.

For any given debate, EurActiv LinksDossiers maps the Issues and the Positions of key stakeholders in a concise and comprehensive way. EurActiv LinksDossiers also list a detailed Timeline with all the important past and next steps as well as an overview of web links to external websites.

LinksDossiers are online treasure troves, full of links to official documents from the EU and other international organisations, Business and Industry, NGOs, think-tank as well as from academic and other online sources.
